When you visit a dental office for the first time, you will likely be surprised to see how relaxed, professional, and welcoming the office is. There are a lot of misconceptions around what a dental office visit is like, as well as the demeanor of and interactions with dental staff. Fortunately, the reality is much better than the myths!
Here are some things you need to know before your first dental office visit.
When You Arrive at Your Dental Office in Eugene, OR
The staff at 360 Dental warmly greets each patient–new or established. You’ll be asked to complete your new patient form and medical history, if you have not already done so online through our website. Bring your dental insurance card with you, so our front desk personnel may scan or copy it, as necessary.
Then, your dental hygienist will bring you to a bright and fully-equipped treatment room, where you can relax in a comfortable dental chair. Your hygienist will ask you about any current health conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, and any medications you take. They will want details on any dental concerns or goals you may have. This information will help us understand how to best serve you.
What Happens Next?
Next comes your dental cleaning. Your hygienist will gently remove the plaque and tartar from on and between your teeth and at the gum line. A thorough cleaning always includes flossing and a refreshing polishing with a rotary brush. While a dental cleaning is a unique experience (because you probably haven’t had another person brush your teeth for you!), it is not painful at all.
Your hygienist will check for signs of tooth decay and gum disease and take a series of digital x-rays to view your teeth, roots, and underlying bone, if necessary. They will instruct you on ways to brush and floss your teeth more efficiently, so your home care complements the care you receive at our dental office.
What Happens During Your Dental Exam?
Next, your dentist, Dr. Ari Binder, will do a complete oral exam. This includes a gentle inspection of your teeth, including the condition of fillings, crowns, and other restorations.
Additionally, he will inspect your mouth for signs of two dangerous health conditions–gum disease and oral cancer. When detected early on, both conditions may be treated successfully. Finally, he will check your dental bite and the function of your jaw joints.
Once he completes your examination, he’ll review his findings with you and detail a comprehensive treatment plan to:
● Address any restorative treatments or tooth replacements needed
● Treat signs and symptoms of gum disease and dental sensitivity
● Outline anesthetic/sedation options for any needed dental work
● Suggest ways to improve how your smile looks (with teeth whitening or other cosmetic dental services)
As the patient, this is your opportunity to ask questions and tell your dental team what long-term smile goals you may have. Your dentist is more than happy to explain your options, costs, and procedural details. Education is a critical part of the services your general dentist and his team provide.
