Losing one or more teeth due to illness or injury can result in a crooked or misaligned smile, which can make you feel self-conscious. Plus, it can affect your speech and even your nutrition, because it may feel uncomfortable to chew certain foods.
Whether you have tooth loss because of an injury or a disease, dental implants are an excellent, permanent solution. They can replace one or more missing teeth and restore your smile, while also maintaining the integrity and health of your jawbone.
Let’s talk about how dental implants can help you keep a lasting smile by replacing missing teeth, and where you can go in Eugene for excellent family dentistry.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a metal prosthesis that is surgically placed in your jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The jawbone must be strong enough to receive the screw-like dental implant, which is later capped with a crown once the implant has fully healed into your jaw.
During the procedure, your dentist first extracts the damaged root (if not already extracted) and prepares your jawbone for the implant. Then, a metal prosthetic root, also known as a post, is implanted into your jawbone.
Once the post is in the jawbone, a process called osseointegration begins, in which the jawbone grows into and unites with the surface of your dental implant. This process takes several months, so until then, your dentist may recommend temporary dentures (removable teeth).
When osseointegration is complete, an abutment – a piece to which the crown will be fitted – may be attached onto the metal post. Sometimes the abutment is placed when the post is implanted in the jawbone.
In the final step, the artificial tooth, called a crown, is attached atop the implant or abutment.
Dental Implants Are an Excellent Solution for Adults
Anyone who is over the age of 18 may be a candidate for a dental implant, provided that the patient:
- Does not have bone deterioration or an oral infection
- Has healthy gums
- Is healthy enough to undergo tooth surgery
Dental implants are not only durable and long-lasting like a natural tooth, but they are also designed to look like your own natural teeth. So, when you smile, your smile is natural and beautiful.
In addition, dental implants can:
- Make you feel more comfortable than using removable dentures
- Provide physical support for your facial features
- Make it easier to eat and chew, thereby boosting your nutrition
- Help you feel confident in the way your smile looks
- Help improve your speech and diction
- Restore your bite force
