If you’re one of the millions of Americans plagued by dental caries; unsightly teeth gaps; or discolored, misshapen teeth, wearing a full-on smile may be the last thing on your mind. But don’t give up hope just yet!
At 360 Dental in Eugene, Oregon, we believe everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile. With that in mind, we offer a number of dental procedures to give your teeth a new lease on life, and among these are dental crowns. But what are dental crowns and when would you need them? Let’s find out.
Uses of a Dental Crown
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over the teeth to fulfill a range of dental purposes, such as the following:
- Closing (large) gaps between teeth
- Concealing severely discolored, crooked, or oddly shaped teeth
- Protecting a diseased tooth (possibly from decay) from further damage
- Protecting a tooth that’s been treated with a root canal
- Restoring the function and appearance of a broken tooth or a severely damaged tooth
- Strengthening tooth enamel
- Supporting a dental bridge firmly in place
Dental crowns are also used to complete the following treatments:
- Root canal therapy
- Tooth replacement with a dental implant (a titanium screw inserted directly into the jaw where the natural root once resided)
- Placement of a permanently fixed dental bridge to replace one or more missing teeth
Dental crowns are a long-term, cost-effective option for patients seeking functional and cosmetic restoration of their teeth. In fact, studies show that the longevity of dental crowns is high, especially with annual follow-up, proper care, and good oral hygiene. Clinical observations have proven that the proportion of teeth damaged from crowns is very minimal.
How Dental Crowns Are Placed
The process starts with a dental exam, including visual inspection of you’re the affected tooth and digital X-rays, when necessary. Dr. Binder will use special tools to remove the damaged enamel and to reshape or trim your tooth down to prepare it for crown placement.
He will then proceed with creating a dental impression and taking note of the shade of your tooth to ensure a perfect match. Once done, he will send it to the dental lab for custom fabrication of your new crown.
In the interim, you may wear a temporary, or transitional crown, to normalize your bite and appearance. At your next appointment with us, Dr. Binder will remove the temporary restoration and cement your new crown in place. To ensure perfect bite and fit, he will make a few adjustments to the crown.
